How Does Age Affect My Risk?

Before the age of menopause, women usually have total cholesterol levels that are lower than those of men the same age. As women and men get older, their blood cholesterol levels rise until about 60 to 65 years of age. After the age of about 50, women often have higher total cholesterol levels than men of the same age.Because of your age, you may be at increased risk for having high cholesterol. The older you are, the higher your risk for high cholesterol and coronary heart disease.

How to Reduce Your Risk

  • Eat foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol
  • Achieve or maintain a healthy weight
  • Get regular physical activity
  • Take medication,as prescribed
  • Follow your healthcare professional's recommendations
  • Stick with your action plan-Managing your cholesterol is a lifelong commitment

Work on to have a healthier heart.

  • If you're a man age 45 or older get your blood cholesterol level tested. Consult your doctor about your options to keep cholesterol control and reducing your risk of heart disease.
  • If you're a woman who is age 55 or older or who is approaching or past menopause and get your blood cholesterol level tested. Consult your doctor
  • Both men and women, take these steps to reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke:
    • Limit your total fat intake to no more than 25% to 35% of your total daily calories.
    • Limit your saturated fat intake to less than 7% of your total daily calories.
    • Limit your cholesterol intake to less than 200 mg per day.
